Can we stay for less than a week?
Cantara is let on a weekly basis only from Saturday to Saturday Saturday from the beginning of April to the end of September. Lets of varying duration are available from October to march – please enquire.

Are there any times Cantara is closed?
No – we are open all year round including the festive season.

What facilities does Cantara have?
Washing machine with outside drying green and indoor drying area; electric cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer, TV, video, radio, CD player, hi-fi

Are there facilities for children and babies?
Folding bed is available to sleep a family of 5 rather than 4
For babies and young children up to 2 years a travel cot with bedding is available.
Please let us know when booking if you would like use of the folding bed and / or travel cot.
Large, safe, private garden for children at the rear of the house.

Are there facilities for guests with disabilities?
The property is one one level excepting a step to the main door.
Please contact us if you have special needs.

Can we take our dog?
No – dogs and other pets are not accepted.

Do we pay extra for heating?
No – electric central heating, lighting and hot water are included in the price.

Is there a telephone?
No – we have found most of our guests take their own mobile phones.
Good reception is available throughout Orkney on Vodafone and Cellnet. Orange in most areas.

Are there any games, books or toys in the house?
There is a bookcase full of books which you are welcome to enjoy but we advise taking any games or toys with you.

Do we need to take towels and bedding?
No – all provided. Our bedding does not use feathers.

Is there a rubbish collection?
Yes, place rubbish at the end of the drive and it will be collected on Tuesday mornings.

Can I smoke in the property?
No – Cantara is non smoking, however the garden is most pleasant; we request cigarette ends are binned and not left in the garden. Thank you.

How far is it to the shops?
Kirkwall’s main shopping street and Post Office is a 10 minute walk from Cantara. The property is also approx 5 minutes drive from two supermarkets: Somerfield’s and Co-op.

How far to a petrol station?
Mills Filling Station is approx 5 minutes drive away

How far to pubs and restaurants?
Variety available throughout Kirkwall, nearest about 7 minutes walk.

Anything special nearby?
Cantara is adjacent to a small workshop where Marlene’s husband Jackie makes Orkney Chairs. The backs of the chairs are hand woven from straw. If you would like to know more about this please visit www.scapacrafts.co.uk The work does not involve any machinery or noise.

Also nearby is Highland Park Visitor Centre where you may choose to enjoy a tour and taste of Orkney’s famous 12 year old single malt whisky.

Scapa Beach is a favourite haunt of local people and is a beautiful sandy beach a short walk from the property.

All the amenities and attraction of Kirkwall are also in the immediate vicinity.
